Description:
Experience the Western Slope’s “Classic Jurassic”. Raft the black water (= calm water) of the Colorado River to see canyon geology, then at Mygatt-Moore Quarry spend a day as a paleontologist digging for dinosaur bones. On day three, we’ll go west to Moab for dinosaur trackways from the Jurassic and Cretaceous.
This is a Dino Trifecta: rocks, bones, & tracks! Bring your hiking shoes, a water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and bug spray. Lunch is included each day, and you will place your order for Day 2 during registration.
Difficulty: Short hikes are involved in this three-day expedition. Most hikes are less than 1 mile and are rated from easy to moderately strenuous.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Raft Adventure on the Colorado River through Ruby and Horsethief Canyons.
7:45 AM – Depart Dinosaur Journey in Fruita, CO for Rimrock Adventures
8:00 AM – Depart Rimrock Adventures for rafting.
Noon – Lunch on the River (provided by rafting company)
1:00 PM – Continue Raft adventure
4:30 PM – Leave the river and return to Fruita.
Day 2: Mygatt-Moore Quarry Dinosaur Dig
8:00 AM – Orientation at Dinosaur Journey in Fruita, CO: participants will sign a health waiver at this time
8:30 AM – Depart Dinosaur Journey.
9:00 AM – Arrive at MMQ for excavations
Noon – Box Lunch at the Quarry (included)
1:00 PM – excavations
3:00 PM– return to Dinosaur Journey
Day 3: Moab Tour of Dinosaur Trackways
8:00 AM – depart Dinosaur Journey in Fruita, CO
Stop 1 – Moab Springs Track Site
Stop 2 – Poison Spider – tracks and rock art (difficulty = moderate to strenuous)
Lunch at Moab Giants Café (included)
Stop 3 – Moab Giants Museum
Stop 4 – Mill Canyon track ways (difficulty = easy)
4:30-5:00pm – return to Dinosaur Journey.
